FDRMOVE IntroductionView Product Demo

FDRMOVE, which includes FDRPAS, provides a high-performance, non-disruptive or minimally-disruptive movement of z/OS data sets. It is ideal for volume consolidation (e.g. consolidating data from three 3390-3’s to a single 3390-9), which can help to free up UCBs where the number of UCBs is restrained by operating system limits.

FDRMOVE is also useful for load balancing to reduce I/O contention within a single DASD subsystem.

FDRMOVE can move data sets between disk volumes in the same disk subsystem, or between disk volumes in different subsystems and between different hardware manufacturers.

Modes of Operation

FDRMOVE provides two modes of operation (see Technical Detail page for a more detailed description):
  • MOVE uses high-performance I/O to move selected data sets directly between the source and target disks as soon as the data sets become available. In a recent test we moved 2.5GB of data (spread between 600 data sets) in around 4 minutes

  • FASTMOVE uses a combination of FDRPAS and instant replication technology (e.g, FlashCopy, EMCSNAP or SnapShot Copy) within the target subsystem to move the data sets at ultra-fast speeds. In a recent benchmark test, FASTMOVE was able to move 1Tb of data (in 250 data sets, spread across 16 volumes) in just 1 minute.
DASD Migration/Consolidation Techniques

You can use two possible techniques for migrating and consolidating disks:
  • You can use FDRPAS to move a set of smaller disks to a matching set of larger disks. FDRPAS will update the free space to make all the new tracks available for allocation. You can then use FDRMOVE to move the data sets from several other input volumes to populate the larger disks.

  • Or you can simply initialize a set of larger disks and use FDRMOVE to move data sets from various smaller disks to populate the new disks.

FDRMOVE Additional Functions

FDRMOVE has three additional functions: SIMMOVE, FDRINITV, EXPANDVTOC.

SIMMOVE simulates an FDRMOVE job by validating the control statements. No data is moved during a SIMMOVE, but this useful feature provides the following information:
  • It gives you a list of the data sets covered by your selection criteria, and the volumes on which they reside. If you select data sets through the catalog, it will also tell you how many input volumes will be involved in the move process.

  • It tells you the current status (i.e. “active” or “inactive”) of all selected data sets. For those that are active, it will tell you which job(s) have them allocated (ENQ’d).

  • For each input volume, it tells you the highest multi-volume sequence number found on that volume (for all non-VSAM and SMS VSAM only).
FDRINITV is a utility to initialise a range of disks in a single execution. FDRINITV allows you to place a VTOC on the target volume(s) that is appropriate for the size of the disk, which will generally be larger than the VTOCs on the source volumes from where you intend to move your data with FDRMOVE.

EXPANDVTOC lets you dynamically expand a VTOC on a volume, even if the volume is active on one or more LPAR. This feature is especially useful when FDRPAS is to be used to move some source disks across to target disks, and if the VTOCs on the source disks are not large enough for the higher capacity target on which they will soon reside.
